I know about copying and pasting icons into the view info screen for apps. But, for example, if I wanted to change the icon for NetNewsWire Lite (IMO it's hideous) I get lost, because everytime the program launches it resets the icon. I'm pretty sure this is because the program displays the number of unread entries in your dock over the icon. Does anyone know how to work...

We need a tad more info. Tell us about the file. What do you think it should be? Where did you get it? What is its extension (if any)? What does a "get info" (hi-lite and press command-i) tell you?

If the print dialog's "layout" isn't your problem, fire up Printer Setup, hi-lite the printer, and click the Info button. The drop-down will likely have three entries, the last being for "installable options." Tell the fool thing you have a duplex unit. It might be the letter designator for "feature set."

Native to OSX is "archive." It makes/expands ZIP files. Hi-lite the file/folder of interest and select the option from the "file" menu. Stuffit is the gold standard, able to handle all manner of compression schemes, but it costs.
